Genetic engineering (GE) extracts genes (from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even human DNA) and artificially forces them into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal. However, GE is not an exact science and new genes cannot be inserted with any accuracy. Any change to an organism's DNA can have side effects that are impossible to predict or control. Natural genes can be deleted or permanently turned on or off, and hundreds may change their behavior. Even the inserted gene can be damaged or rearranged creating proteins that can trigger allergies or promote diseases. Animal studies show that DNA in food can travel into organs throughout the body. Long after we stop eating GMOs, we still have their GE proteins produced continuously inside us.
